Great Getaway Ideas to Dinokeng and the Diamond Era
Just northeast of Tshwane (Pretoria) lies the warm big-sky region of Dinokeng, source of the world’s biggest diamond and an area that sparkles with natural, cultural and historical attractions.

The Dinokeng area boasts many venues for conferences, team building, weddings, game viewing (Big 5), hiking and birding, restaurants, shebeens, museums, water activities, jewellery, art & craft studios and shops, theatres and festivals.
With its rich cultural and historical heritage - featuring iron and stone age sites, relics of colonial diamond mining activities and Anglo-Boer war and World War II sites, as well as its history of black oppression and forced removal.

Visitors can enjoy township tours through the vibrant communities of Hammanskraal, Refilwe and Onverwacht. Dinokeng, meaning “place of rivers”, covers some 281 000 hectares of rural land, including areas such as Roodeplaat, Rayton, Cullinan and the huge wide-open bushveld north of the Moloto Road (R573). It even spills over into the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, up to Pienaars River and the Rust de Winter area.

Dinokeng is a Blue IQ initiative of the Gauteng Provincial Government, with the objective to establish a premier tourist destination close to urban Gauteng. The project aims to promote economic growth, job creation and social upliftment through conserving and developing the historical, natural and cultural heritage of the area.

For the easy location of venues, we have divided Dinokeng into 4 main areas:
DINOKENG NORTH
(area north of R573),

DINOKENG SOUTH
(area south of R573),

ROODEPLAAT DAM AREA

CULLINAN CONSERVANCY.
